In 1909, Governor General Earl Grey and Premier Walter Scott placed a time capsule into the Legislative Building’s cornerstone at a public ceremony celebrating the construction of the building. Thousands of eager citizens traveled from communities across the province of Saskatchewan to attend the once in a lifetime event.

On December 15, 2011, Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart and Premier Wall removed this time capsule placed at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building over 100 years ago.

The 2012 time capsule was a part of the province’s year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Legislative Building. Members of the public were asked for suggestions for the time capsule’s contents. Approximately three quarters of the final list of chosen items was comprised of these suggestions. The remaining items were chosen by an advisory committee based on a list of categories and set criteria with recommendations from other ministries in specific subject areas.

On December 6, 2012, Premier Brad Wall placed the 2012 time capsule into the cornerstone at the Legislative Building, in the same location where the 1909 time capsule was removed in December 2011.
